Mbarire threatens to boycott UDA party primaries as Mwirigi decamps to run as independent candidate

Embu gubernatorial aspirant Cecily Mbarire has threatened to boycott tomorrow’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party primaries.

During a press briefing, Mbarire said that she will only participate in the nomination process if the party guarantees justice.

“As a candidate, what I am advocating for is a free and fair nomination and that is the same thing I have told my party.

I will not take part in the exercise if it’s not free and fair,” Mbarire said.

Mbarire stated that her concerns about the nominations’ integrity stem from rumours that some leaders were plotting to rig elections and create havoc throughout the process.

“I’m very sure that I will clinch the ticket and bring victory to the UDA party,” Mbarire said.

She further urged Embu locals to avoid participating in the suspected planned disruptions.

Mbarire will face up against Manyatta Member of Parliament John Muchiri for the UDA party ticket.

At the same time, Edith Mwirigi has withdrawn from tomorrow’s UDA primaries, to decamp from the party and contest as an independent candidate for Meru Woman Representative seat.

Mwirigi faults the inadequate information of the process and management of the primary election.

“The stage has been clearly set to short-change the will of the people through the influence meddled with who became clerks to manage the elections and the deliberate efforts by UDA leaders to malign sideline blackmail and hold information from us,” she said.

The UDA Party leader Deputy President William Ruto assured that the exercise will be free, fair and democratic, noting that everything has been put in place to ensure that it is successful.

Speaking from his official Karen office today, Ruto also asked the aspirants to ensure their supporters do not engage in violent activities.

Ruto has further asked all aspirants participating in the party primaries tomorrow to do so peacefully.

“I am asking all our aspirants across the country to participate in the primaries peacefully, and to make sure that their supporters are peaceful,” DP stated.

“We have committed that the election will be free, fair and democratic, we expect the aspirants to co-operate with our officials and have their agents in place so as to deliver credible results,” he said.
