Matiang’i imposes 6pm-6am curfew in parts of Rift Valley

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi has imposed a 6pm to 6am curfew in parts of Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo East and West Pokot Counties over insecurity.

In a Gazette notice, Matiang’i stated that the order will take effect from the 7th August, 2021 and shall remain in effect for a period of sixty days.

“The order is in view of the serious threat posed to security and public order by disturbances occurring in the Tot area of Marakwet East Sub-county in Elgeyo Marakwet County and the effects in the neighbouring Baringo and West Pokot counties,” said Matiang’i.

Under the new order, there shall be no public gatherings, processions or movement.

“…either alone or as a group during the period of the curfew except as has been permitted in writing by the Inspector General of the National Police Service,” he said.

The order applies to Kolowa and Ngoron divisions of Tiaty West Sub-county, Baringo County, Tot and Chesongoch divisions of Marakwet East Subcounty, Elgeyo Marakwet County and Sekerot and Cheptulel locations of Pokot Central Subcounty, West Pokot County.

This comes following attacks between two communities that have left more than 17 people dead and scores injured.

Since 2015, the region has experienced sporadic clashes that have not only destabilised families, but also disrupted health, education, economic activities and service delivery.

In recent months, the region has been the centre of attacks, prompting Matiang’i to hold a crisis security meeting at Tot, Elgeyo Marakwet.

In bid to end insecurity within those counties, Matiang’i outlined measures aimed at addressing perennial insecurity in Kerio Valley.

He said that leaders had resolved not to hold any other security meetings in the region as the government moves to address the root causes of insecurity there.

He noted that the government will move to ensure adequate security personnel are deployed to all locations and sub-locations in the next few days.

“The IG has agreed to immediately move in with a view to have sufficient numbers deployed to the right places. We’re going to have a special formation that will be placed in Dira,” Matiang’i said.
