DP Gachagua call urgent interventions to address substance abuse among the youth
The Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called for urgent solutions to address rising cases of drug abuse among youth across the country.
The DP noted that illicit alcohol and substance abuse remains a huge threat to the lives of young people especially in Central Kenya region.
Gachagua spoke in Githunguri during a youth mentorship dinner organized by the area MP Gathoni Wamuchomba with support of professionals from the constituency.
“A sustained focus on addressing some of the key issues facing our youth today is the way to go in building a firm foundation for a highly productive nation,” said Gachagua
The DP lauded Wamuchomba for executing programmes aimed at addressing challenges that face the youth such as drugs and alcohol abuse.
“I am glad that the leadership, such as that espoused by Wa Muchomba, is jointly seeking solutions to these perennial problems in helping our vulnerable populations rebuild their lives back better,” he stated
The DP has been at forefront in fighting alcohol abuse in the Mt Kenya region.
In January this year (2023), Gachagua ordered administrators to crack the whip on those selling illicit brews after concerns of rising levels of alcoholism in the region.
The DP also called on county governments to allow only one bar and restaurant to operate in a particular town while the rest of the outlets open at 5PM and close at 11PM as part of efforts to curb alcoholism in the region.
