Matiang’i dismisses claims that Ruto’s security was disparaged

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has dismissed claims that Deputy President William Ruto’s security was disparaged.

Appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Administration and National Security, Matiang’i said Ruto’s security was re-assigned not withdrawn as claimed and the move aimed at optimising efficiency.

He says presidential escort that forms the core security of second in command is intact.

“There was no removal of the security personal of the DP, it was a rearrangement. The Inspector General consulted within the structures of security sector before making the changes, it was not a matter of win-score,” he said.

According to Matiang’i, the re arrangement was initiated by the IG Hillary Mutyambai for the reasons he cannot explain in public.

He said that they informed Ruto about the changes as it is routine to do so.

However, In a statement by the communication secretary, David Mugonyi, the DP’s office said they had not received any explanation of the change of guard.

Mugonyi termed the withdrawal as unlawful, adding that it had been extended to all of Ruto’s residences.

The DP’s office complained about what it termed a diabolical demonstration of bad faith.

“The decision has been made contrary to the Police Service Standing Orders Chapter 8 section 5(E) that the GSU Commandant shall be responsible for the security of the President, the Deputy President, State Houses and Lodges,” he said.

Mugonyi said the withdrawal is the latest installment in a sustained and systematic effort to undermine the Deputy President’s personal security in pursuit of political vendetta saying it exposes him to personal harm.

Mugonyi also said that the DP is elected and “the worrying pattern of wanton violations” of the law towards him are meant to sabotage, and undermine the office.
