Marginalised counties to get Sh16.8 billion under Equalisation Fund

The funds are meant facilitate the provision of basic services including water, roads, health facilities and electricity

Marginalised counties will benefit from Sh16.8 billion in the 2025/26 financial year if Parliament passes the Equalisation Fund Appropriation Bill, 2025.

According to the Bill tabled by Budget and Appropriations Committee chairman Samwel Atandi, Turkana County will be allocated Sh1,860,614,374, West Pokot (Sh1, 661, 556, 686), Wajir (Sh1,187,457,792), Narok (Sh1,254,952,707),Samburu (Sh1,056, 572,934),  Mandera (Sh1,225,254,814) and Garissa (Sh1,026,040,684).

If the Bill is approved, other counties that would benefit are Kilifi (Sh878,031,953), Marsabit (Sh763,773,939), Baringo (Sh967,681,327), Tana River (Sh917,015,252), Kajiado (Sh674,525,449), Kitui (Sh646,409,901), Kwale (Sh475,834,422), Migori (Sh289,904,906), Isiolo (Sh270,219,210), Laikipia (Sh194,020,583), Homa Bay (Sh214,023,956), Nandi (Sh189,860,206) and Elgeyo Marakwet (Sh105,894,890).

Kericho (Sh99,011,445), Bungoma (Sh95,592,532), Tharaka Nithi (Sh71,565,664), Siaya (Sh51,997,762), Meru (Sh48,669,736), Kisumu (Sh39,573,210), Bomet (Sh31,249,217), Busia (Sh29,239,974), Taita Taveta (Sh21,686,762), Machakos (Sh21,016,995), Trans Nzoia (Sh12,161,730), Nakuru (Sh10,465,313), Murang’a (Sh9,236,572),

The Equalisation Fund was established under Article 204(1) of the Constitution to facilitate the provision of basic services including water, roads, health facilities and electricity to marginalised areas to the extent necessary to bring the quality of those services in those areas to the level generally enjoyed by the rest of the nation, so far as possible.
