Low enrollment for technical courses at Ruiru college irks area MP King’ara

As a motivation, the legislator had pledged to pay fees for trainees mainly in electrical, ICT, beauty and masonry, on condition they hit the 100 target, but so far only 24 registered from the locality

A low student enrollment for technical courses at the the Ruiru vocational training college in Kiambu County has alarmed area Member of Parliament (MP) Simon King’ara who has offered to sponsor them.
As a motivation, the legislator had pledged to pay fees for trainees mainly in electrical, ICT, beauty and masonry, on condition they hit the 100 target, but so far only 24 registered from the locality.
Other courses to be covered by the MP include plumbing, the supply chain management, office administration and social work as well as food production and food services.
King’ara who spoke during the Mazingira Day tree planting event at St George’s Primary School in Ruiru town said the offer still stands and urged parents to ensure their children enrol through his NG-CDF office.
He pinpointed those from Gatong’ora ward, where the college is situated, to take advantage of his offer so that they can become self employed once they are through.
“I am calling on parents and guardians to ensure eligible learners take the chance which is meant to better their lives, especially those from Gatong’ora which hosts the college,” King’ara pleaded.
The MP at the same time said Ruiru which is the country’s most populous constituency with over 800,000 people is set to get an additional Sh90 million in bursary allocation in the coming year.
Defending his support for the William Ruto government, the MP said he did so to ensure that his vast constituency gets the requisite development projects.
“For instance, we have been told that this school alone requires eight new classrooms to accommodate more learners. Where do you think I will get the resources if i fight the government?” King’ara posed.
The constituency, with secondary and college learners in excess of 70,000 in need of sponsorship, has been constrained when it comes to government bursary allocations.
King’ara also appealed to local investors to help in fencing off St George’s Primary School and other infrastructural developments.
During the tree planting exercise, more than 2,000 seedlings were distributed to local schools from the office of Information Communication and Technology Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo who is an alumni of St George’s.
Kabogo who was slated to preside over the event did not turn up as he was reported to be out of the country. However, he was represented by senior members of staff from the Ministry.
Area Deputy County Commissioner Julius Too said the tree planting exercise will continue and appealed to learners and teachers to help narture the seedlings by watering them.
