Laikipia County partners with ActionAid Kenya on clean energy and water management
Irungu says initiative seeks to harness solar energy to power irrigation systems, reduce water and air pollution, and lower greenhouse gas emissions
Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu has held a consultative meeting with officials from ActionAid Kenya to discuss a joint initiative on clean energy and sustainable water management in agriculture.
The meeting, held at the Governor’s Nanyuki town office, was led by ActionAid Kenya’s Interim Programs and Strategy Lead, Judith Wambura.
It focused on exploring collaborative efforts to enhance agricultural productivity through the use of solar energy and modern irrigation systems.
Governor Irungu said the partnership aims to support climate-resilient farming by promoting efficient water use, agro-processing, and the adoption of renewable energy technologies.
“This initiative seeks to harness solar energy to power irrigation systems, reduce water and air pollution, and lower greenhouse gas emissions,” said Irungu.
“It will help diversify livelihoods, boost household incomes, and stimulate economic growth across the county.”
The project will be implemented in various parts of Laikipia County, targeting local farmers with sustainable solutions to climate-related challenges.
It is expected to contribute to food security, create employment opportunities, and improve environmental conservation efforts.
ActionAid Kenya pledged its commitment to working with county authorities, community-based organizations, and other stakeholders to ensure the success and long-term sustainability of the initiative.
The governor expressed optimism that the partnership will transform agricultural practices in Laikipia by making farming more sustainable, profitable, and adaptable to climate change.
