Kisii University to host East Africa’s top Kiswahili scholars

Kisii University is set to host the 23rd Chama cha Kiswahili Afrika Mashariki (CHAKAMA) Kiswahili Conference, bringing together scholars, researchers, language experts and education stakeholders from across East Africa to deliberate on the growth, teaching and global relevance of the Kiswahili language.

The conference, one of the region’s premier academic forums on Kiswahili, is expected to attract participants from universities, research institutions and language organizations who will present research papers and exchange ideas on emerging trends in Kiswahili studies.

According to the organisers, the annual conference aims to strengthen scholarly research, promote innovation in Kiswahili teaching and learning, and explore the language’s expanding role in regional integration, technology, diplomacy and sustainable development.

The event comes at a time when Kiswahili continues to gain international recognition following its adoption by the African Union as one of its official working languages and UNESCO’s designation of July 7 as World Kiswahili Language Day.

Scholars attending the conference are expected to examine issues ranging from language policy, literature, translation, lexicography and curriculum development to the integration of artificial intelligence and digital technologies in Kiswahili education.

The meeting will also provide a platform for academics to showcase new research findings and discuss strategies for preserving and promoting Kiswahili as one of Africa’s fastest-growing international languages.

Kisii University said hosting the conference reflects its commitment to advancing research, innovation and the promotion of African languages through scholarly engagement.

The institution has increasingly positioned itself as a centre for academic conferences and research collaborations that address regional and global challenges.

Education stakeholders are expected to use the forum to discuss ways of strengthening Kiswahili instruction in schools and universities while enhancing collaboration among researchers across East Africa.

The conference is also expected to inspire young scholars and postgraduate students to undertake more research in Kiswahili language, literature and culture, while fostering partnerships among universities and research institutions.

Organisers say the outcomes of the conference will contribute to ongoing efforts to elevate Kiswahili as a language of education, commerce, diplomacy and scientific research, reinforcing its growing influence beyond East Africa and its increasing recognition on the global stage.
