Kenyans brace for tough times as fuel prices rise by Sh5.50

Kenyans should brace themselves for higher cost of essential commodities following a Sh5.50 rise in the retail price of fuel.

The price of all three fuel products has increased for yet another month in the latest maximum price review by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

Following the hike, Super Petrol is now expected to cost Sh150.12 in the capital city Nairobi while the cost of diesel and kerosene will rise to Sh131 and Sh118.94 per litre respectively.

EPRA has attributed the price jump to an increase in the average landed cost of the fuel products with kerosene marking the highest price jump at 31.13 per cent.

“The average landed cost of imported super petrol increased by 1.46 per cent… diesel increased by 6.49 per cent… while kerosene increased by 31.13 per cent,” Epra said in a statement announcing the price capping guide for the May-June cycle.

It also noted that prices would have been higher, but the government applied a subsidy.

For instance, in the cycle between May 15 and June 14, the price stabilization mechanism has subsidized Sh26.35 on the cost of super petrol, Sh43.94 for diesel and Sh50.32 for kerosene.

Without the subsidy, petrol would cost Sh176.47 while diesel would cost Sh174.94 and Sh169.26 respectively.

The cost of fuel is expected to take effect from today midnight.
