Kenyan teams improve in day of thrills in Africa hockey tournament
It was a game that began with the Kenya giants applying early pressure towards their opponent
Kenya’s five representatives in the ongoing Africa Hockey Federation-Africa Cup for Club Champions had a more improved performance last evening as the title fight heats up.
In the match results Wednesday for Men, last year finalists Western Jaguars thumped Niger Flickers 6-1 in a one sided contest. Jaguars are now in fourth place with four points after four games. It was a game that began with the Kenya giants applying early pressure towards their opponent who had to cave in.
In another men’s duel, Sikh Union Club tied 4-4 with Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in what turned out to be a feisty goalfest. The Sikhs came hard and twice led in the match but a few individual mistakes cost them a desired win. Sikhs are second in Pool B with seven points after winning twice in four matches played.
However, USIU-Africa challenges continued after falling 6-3 to leaders Aircraft Hockey Club in a Pool B. The University side is bottom with no points in four matches. It has been a horror show for a team that had promise but faced far tougher opponents.
Meanwhile in the Women’s results of Wednesday, Mombasa Hockey Club emerged victorious albeit with a slim 1-0 over hosts Smouha Hockey Club. Smouha leads Pool B with nine points off four matches after emerging victorious in three games. MHC on their part is on seven points and looks primed and ready for qualifying to the knockout stages.
In another women’s match, USIU-Africa tied 1-1 with Nigeria’s Plateau Queens in the heavyweight duel. This was a seesaw match with both sides having their moments in attack. The Kenyan side is tied on seven points and is currently third. USIU has two wins but with a tiny goal difference of +3.
Ghana’s GRA so far is the form team in the women’s competition having won all four pool matches and collecting 12 points as they seek to clinch the title from the land of Pharaohs.
