Kenya Railways begin construction of Nairobi Railway City Phase 1
The Kenya Railways Corporation has started construction of the Phase 1 of the Nairobi Railway City.
Through a statement, Kenya Railways Managing Director Phillip Mainga said that the overall scope of the Phase one early works that have commenced will cover the construction of a pedestrian footbridge across the Nairobi Railway Yard, construction of a new Nairobi Central Railway station and a public square.
He stated that the pedestrian footbridge across the Nairobi Railway yard will be all weather, modern and will also be convenient for people living with disabilities.
Mainga advised pedestrians and rail commuters to be cautious as they move in and out of the Nairobi Central Station, urging them to use the designated pathways to avoid any incidents.
Other works in phase one also include hoarding and securing of the railway station and public park site, detailed drainage overhaul within the Nairobi Railway yard and construction of a new structural steel Locomotive shed (CXR Sick shed) at the Makadara Yard.
The Nairobi Railway City project is divided into phases and is scheduled for completion in 2030.
The city will regenerate the area around Nairobi Railway Station into a modern transit facility, provide a livable and sustainable urban space and provide an iconic development to position Nairobi as a leading world city.
The project is located on 425 acres of land belonging to Kenya Railways.
The United Kingdom had pledged Sh12billion to develop the multibillion project that is aimed at decongesting the Central Business District as well as create employment.
The project was conceived during retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s tenure at an estimated cost of Sh28 billion.
