Kenya, EU launches strategic dialogue framework to boost regional peace, stability

Strategic dialogue framework between Kenya and the European Union has been launched following a meeting in Brussels between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Charles Michel, the president of the European Council.
The strategic dialogue framework recognizes Kenya as a strong democratic partner of the EU in East Africa and Horn of Africa region with potential for enhancing regional stability and performing a constructive role in peace and security.
According to EU, Kenya has the potential to enhance regional stability and play a role in peace and security.
“This upgrade of the Kenya-European Union relations builds on the meeting between the two counterparts on 9 March 2021 at State House, Nairobi, and the renewed European Union Strategy for the Horn of Africa, adopted in May 2021, in which the European Union confirmed its readiness to step up its relationship with Kenya,” reads part of a joint statement.
Parties in the meeting added that Kenya is a strong democratic partner in the East African region and in the Horn of Africa.
“Moreover, Kenya is a key player internationally at the United Nations, the African Union and other fora,” they said.
In combating climate change and fostering peace and security, Kenya and the European Union have sustained a consistent and long-term partnership.
The policy discussions from the strategic dialogue will inform potential EU support to actions agreed with the national government.
Through the strategic dialogue, Kenya and the EU union will seek to strengthen cooperation on domestic, regional and global interest matters such as regional and multilateral cooperation; democracy, governance and human rights, gender equality; peace, security and stability; trade and climate change.
Other areas of elevated cooperation between Kenya and the EU include social development and digital technologies.
The President, was accompanied by Cabinet Secretaries Raychelle Omamo (Foreign Affairs), Betty Maina (Trade) and Aden Mohammed (EAC).
