Kenya activates surveillance system following outbreak of Marburg in Tanzania

PS Mary Muthoni says ministry has made great strides in terms of the response to the Mpox outbreak and preparedness for a possible MVD outbreak.

The ministry of Health says it has put in place a robust surveillance following the outbreak of Marburg Virus Disease (MVP) in neighbhouring Tanzania’s karega region.

Speaking at media workshop on Mpox in Nairobi, Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni said the surveillance system will enable them to quickly identify  any potential cases.

“The government of Kenya is committed to safeguarding the health of all Kenyans, and in ensuring that we are well prepared for disease outbreaks and other health emergencies,” Ms Muthoni said.

She said Kenya has made great strides in terms of the response to the Mpox outbreak and preparedness for a possible MVD outbreak.

This includes close monitoring of travellers, especially those coming from countries where there is an active outbreak and the provision of timely information to healthcare providers and the public across the country.

“With continued vigilance, effective implementation of the recommended public health interventions, and the collaboration of all sectors—including you, the media—I am confident that we will win against these public health challenges,” she said.

She said the ministry is working coordination with key stakeholders, including the World Health Organisation (WHO), United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), and other partners, to ensure that we have the necessary capacity to respond.

This includes strengthening our health system, providing our health workers with the necessary training and personal protective equipment (PPE), and ensuring that diagnostic tools are readily available in our laboratories.

All persons in contact with a case are being monitored regularly and prevented from leaving their places of isolation until cleared to travel by health authorities.

“At any point of the entry (airport, ground crossing or port), body temperature will be checked on all travelers and those with feverish conditions will be further evaluated by the Port Health Authority,” the statement says.
