Two people were fatally injured and several others left with serious injuries after a lorry lost control after its braking system failed in the middle of Kisii town to Daraja Mbili market.

Reports indicate that of the eleven people taken to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, three are in a critical situation after they sustained injuries from the accident.

Speaking to the media outside the hospital, health officials from the Kisii County Government said that a total of 18 people were impacted by the incident.

“18 people were impacted by the incident, with two dying at the scene,” the officials stated.

According to the officials, the impact would have been huge if it were a market day at Daraja Mbili, which they say has become a black spot.

“If it were a market day, the impact would have been huge. Though we are saddened by those we have lost in the accident, as the spot has become a blackspot,” the officials said.

“On behalf of the Kisii County Governor, Simba Arati, we extend our sympathy to the families who have lost their loved ones and those who have sustained injuries,” they added.

Nyanchwa Sub-County Commander Kazungu Charo said investigations are on as he shared that the lorry hit two vehicles after it lost direction.

Kazungu confirmed that the accident happened a few minutes before 8:30 am, as he echoed the sentiments by the County Health officials that the impact would have been huge if it had been a market day, considering the market is always densely populated.

“The accident happened at around 8:25 am when the accident happened. Daraja Mbili is populated because the market is big. The Lorry lost direction, hitting two vehicles, a Prado and a Probox. Investigations are still on to unravel more about the incident,” Kazungu said.
