KANU in dilemma whether to hold primaries or not

A wave of anxiety has gripped former ruling party Kanu over the criterion it is going to use to pick its candidates with the deadline set by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission fast approaching.

Whether or not Kanu is going to hold party primaries has been a matter of concern for aspirants especially in the Rift Valley where the independence party has attracted the biggest number of aspirants eyeing various seats.

Some of the party branch officials and supporters said that they feel abandoned by the party headquarters with some accusing national officials for failing to provide a clear path for the party which is trying to reclaim its footing in the country’s politics.

Today, party officials in Nakuru and Baringo Counties insisted that there are going to resist any attempts to give some aspirants direct nomination noting that all aspirants should be subjected to a nomination exercise.

Baringo County Kanu Chairman Peter Chepkong’a told the Informer that they particularly resisted an attempt by Baringo North parliamentary aspirant Joseph Makilap to be declared Kanu nominee since there three other individuals fighting for the party ticket.

“We rejected this because that is not democracy, we’re saying let the people decide,” he explained.

In Mogotio, Dr Noah Chepkech appears to be having a head start after Senator Moi hosted him and his supporters at his Alphega home in February before declaring the youthful politician the ideal candidate.
