Kamiti prison warder ‘Cop Shakur’ wears Jacob Juma T-shirt to court, released on Sh100,000 bond

Jackson Kuria has been in the news since he took part in the Gen Z protests against proposed new taxes in June last year, which briefly led to his suspension.

A Kamiti Maximum Security Prison warder has been released on a bond of Ksh 100,000 with two sureties of a similar amount after he pleaded not guilty to a charge of publishing false information. Alternatively, he was directed to pay a cash bail of Ksh 50,000.

Jackson Kuria Kihara alias Cop Shakur appeared before Milimani Principal Magistrate Gilbert Shikwe where he was that on January 11 2025 at around 1800 hours at unknown place within the republic of Kenya jointly with others who were not before the court, he knowingly and unlawfully published false information while using the X Cop account dubbed: Shakur the Cop, @Shakur the Cop.
The post allegedly read:” Under which law? This CS is the upcoming Dictator. He is the one responsible for abductions together with Ruto…”
According to the prosecution, the accused did this while knowing the information was false and well calculated to cause panic among Kenyans, which is contrary to section 23 of Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act.
State prosecutor Judy Koech did not oppose his release on bond.
Kuria’s lawyer, James Ong’amo prayed, the court to release him on free bond stating that he is a Kenyan Citizen having the right of expression and he will appear before the court for trials.
He told the magistrate that the accused has been in custody for three days and urged the court to release hi,
“Your honour the accused has been in custody for three days and I urge this court to consider my application for his release,” Ong’amo prayed.
The matter will be mentioned on February 17 for pre-trial hearing and directions.
Kuria has been in the news since he took part in the Gen Z protests against proposed new taxes in June last year, which briefly led to his suspension.
Yesterday, he came to court with a printed jacket featuring the photo of the late businessman Jacob Juma, who was known for his fight against influential persons allegedly engaged in corruption.
Juma was mysteriously shot and killed alongside a female companion along Ngong Road in Nairobi on May 6, 2016.
