Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has been ruled out of the presidential election in 2022 by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission(IEBC).
Musyoka’s name does not appear on the IEBC’s list of 16 contenders for the president.
Musyoka is one of four political party candidates and nine independents that failed to meet the IEBC’s stringent requirements of 48,000 supporters from at least 24 counties, as well as proper presentation of supporters’ names and copies of their national identity cards.
Wiper party officials had initially persuaded Musyoka to reconsider his presidential bid and exhaust all internal Azimio la Umoja Coalition conflict settlement options.
The decision was made today in Stoni Athi, Machakos county, during a delegate’s meeting.
Speaking after a meeting attended by at least 500 party aspirants, organising secretary Robert Mbui said the meeting had resolved that the country’s interests outweigh that of the party.
“There is a dispute resolution mechanism under that alliance, so we are asking our party leader that we do consider the possibility of having further discussions on this coalition arrangement,” he said.
The IEBC has however cleared leading candidates Raila Odinga (Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition) and Deputy President William Ruto of the United Democratic Alliance.
Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria (Usawa Kwa Wote Party), George Wajackoya (Roots Party), Ekuru Aukot (Thirdway Alliance), Jimi Wanjigi (Safina Party), Njeru Kathangu (Ford Asili), and David Mwaura Wahiga are among those seeking for political party tickets (Agano Party).
Those shortlisted as Independents are Gibson Ngaruiya Ng’ang’a, Dorothy Kemunto Nyangori, Peter Mubiko King’ori, Jeremiah Nyaga, Jane Juliet Munyoki, Faith Wairimu Ngigi, Eliud Muthiora Kariara and George Munyotta Kamau.
