KAA says Moi Airport incident was part of ‘full-scale emergency drill’

It maintains emergency response team is on the ground to manage the situation at the airside and normal operations remain unaffected

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has revealed that the incident at the Moi International Airport in Mombasa was part of a full-scale Emergency Drill at the airport.

In a statement shared on its socials, KAA said the exercise is part of the safety and security maintenance standard at the airport.

“We would like to confirm that the emergency response at Moi International Airport was part of a full-scale EMERGENCY DRILL. The exercise was part of our commitment to maintaining the highest safety and security standards at our airports,” KAA shared in the update.

This is even as the authority has maintained that the emergency response team is on the ground to manage the situation at the airside and normal operations remain unaffected.

“Emergency response teams are actively managing a situation on the airside at Moi International Airport. Airport operations remain normal and unaffected,” it said.

A few hours ago, KAA shared that it had deployed an emergency response team at the Moi International Airport in Mombasa after an incident involving an aircraft.

In their statement, KAA confirmed that there was an incident at the airport, even though they did not reveal the exact incident, as they added that emergency services are on the ground to manage the situation at the airport’s airside.

“Airport emergency services are responding to an incident involving an aircraft at Moi Intl. Airport. First responders are managing the situation. We will provide further details as soon as they are confirmed. Please monitor this account for official updates,” KAA said in its statement.

Details of the incident and its nature, however, remain anonymous as KAA has not shared whether injuries have been reported or not.

KAA called on Kenyans to follow its official communication channels for any further developments.

The incident, which had initially sparked panic and speculation among the public, was swiftly clarified by the KAA in an official statement.

“We would like to confirm that the emergency response at Moi International Airport was part of a full-scale EMERGENCY DRILL. The exercise was part of our commitment to maintaining the highest safety and security standards at our airports,” the authority assured the public.
