Jubilee candidate for Embakasi East constituency Maina Waruinge has pulled out of the race and thrown his weight behind one of his opponents in their efforts to unseat the incumbent Babu Owino.
The former Mungiki leader has stepped down to support United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Francis Mureithi in his bid for the parliamentary seat.
“Embakasi East Jubilee MP aspirant Maina Waruinge quits the race and defects to UDA to support Francis Mureithi,” Deputy President William Ruto said.
Waruinge stepped down at a rally in the constituency today, seven days to the August 9, general elections.
Mureithi is seeking to oust the incumbent MP Babu Owino.
In 2017, Mureithi, who was contesting on a Jubilee ticket, lost narrowly to Babu Owino.
Others in the race are Paul Okumu, Joash Omwenga of Wiper party, and Stephen Maina.
