The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has cleared Roots Party presidential candidate George Wajackoyah to run in the August elections.
Wafula Chebukati, CEO of the IEBC, made the statement today at the Bomas of Kenya after Wajackoyah submitted the required signatures from 24 counties.
“I want to confirm that the supporters’ list you submitted has met the requirements. On these grounds, we have accepted your nomination as a presidential candidate for the August General Election. You will be issued a nomination certificate which you will sign. Congratulations,” said Chebukati.
On Monday, the elections commission had rejected Wajackoyah after submitting a list of supporters from 17 counties rather than the requisite 24.
“Where we error and we are told we can rectify. Whether we make it or not, Kenya will still continue. I thank Chebukati for being realistic,” Wajackoyah noted.
The commission is keen on verifying details to ensure that all the presidential candidates comply with the legal requirement.
Roots Party flagbearer was given until June 2, 2022, to collect all signatures before being officially cleared as an aspirant in the nine-day process that began on May 29, 2022.
