The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has today kicked off the second phase of the Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration and Diaspora voter registration (ECVR).
IEBC chairman, Wafula Chebukati, said the commission will conduct the second phase of (ECVR) from today to February 6, 2022, while the diaspora voter registration will start on January 21 and end on February 6, 2022.
“Take this advantage and register yourself to vote. This exercise will take place from January 17 to February 6,” Chebukati said.
The exercise which commences today comes after the Commission failed to meet its target of registering 4.5 million after registering 800,462 new voters.
The diaspora voter registration will start on January 21 and end on February 6, 2022.
The Commission is expected to extend the registration to eligible Kenyan voters living in the diaspora in 12 countries including Burundi, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, South Africa, United Kingdom, Canada, USA, South Sudan, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, and Germany.
The electoral body also plans to deploy more kits to learning institutions and at least three Biometric Voter Registration kits per ward to hit the target.
Chebukati said they will go out of their way to ensure at least 25 million voters participate in the August 9 polls.
Additionally, he announced that they will allow Kenyans who want to transfer polling stations or change their particulars to do so during the period.
The commission failed to reach the six million target during the first phase of the exercise last year only 1.52 million eligible Kenyans registered as new voters.
Apathy and lack of national identity (ID) cards, especially among the youths and poor civic education were blamed for the low turnout.
