IEBC begins hearing of 262 registration complaints
Speaking during the launch of three panels that will hear the disputes at the Milimani law courts today, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati indicated that the panels should be able to deliver their judgment and ruling within 48 hours after the completion of the hearing.
Those who are displeased with the committee’s decision will seek additional remedies, including going to the High Court, according to Chebukati.
The hearings will begin today.
“IEBC is responsible for the settlement of electoral disputes, including those related to/ arising from nominations. Two hundred sixty-two complaints filed – the panel will have heard, made determinations in 10 days,” he stated.
Those disqualified from running for president were Jimi Wanjigi of the Safina Party, Ekuru Aukot of the Thirdway Alliance, and independent candidates James Kamau and Reuben Kigame.
The four have filed objections with the committee, requesting that the commission’s decision to prohibit them be reversed.
The Safina party leader appealed the IEBC’s decision to reject his nomination due to a lack of a university degree, arguing that he completed his course last December and was scheduled to graduate last month. Still, his graduation was pushed back to November, which should not be used to deny him a chance to compete.
Business-cum politician Wanjigi also accuses the IEBC of discrimination for not allowing him extra time to gather the necessary signatures and asks the committee to order the IEBC to clear him.
“I duly completed my course in December 2021. I was subsequently issued with a letter of completion by Daystar University and was scheduled to graduate in May 2022,the university has pushed it to November 2022,” he said.
