‘I met him for the first time in court’, woman disowns man claiming to be her son
Another witness said he did not sign the documents produced in court which bear the names of Abdi Alio
A Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer, has disclosed how a Somali national obtained a Kenyan identity card by lying that he is a son to a woman who disowned him in court.
Sergeant Amos Gachie Gakure, a detective attached to the Public Complaints Division at Mazingira House, told a Milimani court that a report was made on January 4, 2023, against Abdihakim Said Jama being a non-Kenyan and in possession of fake identification.
The investigator told the court how they sought information from the Department of the Registration of Persons on his birth certificate to confirm whether it was genuine.
The investigations revealed that Jama had forged a birth certificate entry No. L00906313/13 and serial number 4208657 which belongs to Anna Gatwiri Kithure.
It was also disclosed that Jama pretended to be the son of an unsuspecting woman, one Fatuma Mohamed, who hails from Burat, Isiolo county.
“We looked for the purported mother and she produced a list of names of her eight children and she said that the accused’s name is not familiar with her hence disowning being even related by blood,” Gakure said.
When Fatuma appeared to give her testimony, she told the court that government officers visited her at home in June 2023 and produced photos of a man and enquired whether she knew him.
“On viewing the photos, I did not recognise him and he was not my son,” Fatuma said.
She left the court in awe after confirming that her alleged ‘son’ is a stranger and she met him for the first time in court.
Another witness, Abdi Aliow Issak, a businessman and a member of the vetting committee of Ngare Mara location, denied taking part in a purported meeting to vet applicants of National Identity Cards where Jama claims to have been vetted and approved in 2011.
The witness added he did not sign the documents produced in court which bear the names of Abdi Alio, and informed the court that he always signs all official documents with his three full name and not two as in the document presented before the court.
Jama was charged that between March and June 2011, in Isiolo, he gave false information to a person employed in the public service for presenting false documents to the chief in order to procure a Kenyan Identity Card.
He also claimed to be the son of Fatuma.
The hearing will resume on April 1.
