I have no offshore accounts, Raila on the Pandora Papers

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has said he has no offshore accounts adding that those who have is okay as long as they can account for it.

Weighing in on the Pandora Papers, Raila said there was no problem with Kenyans opening offshore accounts as long as they are not used to siphon state resources or execute corruption schemes.

He those having monies and properties outside the country to declare the same.

“I have no offshore accounts. All my wealth are within the country. I am playing locally,” he said in a local radio station.

The ODM leader said focus should not be on the accounts but on how the money in the account was acquired.

“Hii ni mambo ya Pandoras box. Sioni kama kuna shida kuwa na account kule nje bora unaweza kusema jinsi ulifungua account. Vile uhuru amesema atasema zaidi atakapo rudi,” Raila said.

He has called for a scrutiny of wealth held by lawyers on behalf of corrupt state and public officers saying government offices subject people to temptations.
His sentiments comes after leaked documents stated that President Uhuru Kenyatta and six members of his family secretly owned a network of offshore companies.

The leaked report alleges that Kenyatta’s family is linked to 13 offshore companies holding more than Sh3.3 billion.

However, the report did not disclose the sources of the funds nor wrongdoing of any kind on the account holder.

Responding to the documents, Kenyatta said the reports will enhance the financial transparency and openness required in the country and globally.
He has called for an audit of all secret offshore accounts which will lift that veil of secrecy and darkness for those who cannot explain their assets or wealth.

“My attention has been drawn to comments surrounding the Pandora Papers. Whilst I will respond comprehensively on my return from my State Visit to America,” he said.
