High Court declines party hopping after Saturday’s deadline
Politicians will not be allowed to party hope after Saturday’s deadline following the decision by a three-judge bench to decline the extension of party hoping pending the hearing and determination of a suit seeking to extend it.
Justice Hedwig Ongudi said the court would issue further directions on the petition once heard and determined next Friday.
“The conservatory orders being sought have very serious and far-reaching repercussions to all the parties herein and the public at large.
A decision on the same may only be made upon hearing all this matter. In the circumstances, the oral application for interim conservatory orders is declined,” Justice Ongudi said.
The Election Act states that all registered political parties should submit their list of aspirants posed to participate in the August polls to the Registrar of Political Parties by Saturday.
The list shall be forwarded to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Once a list is with the commission, the members in the list shall not be allowed to move to a different party unless they vie as an independent candidate.
IEBC, on the other hand, has given the deadline of May 9, 2022 to vie as an independent candidate.
