Graft case against Obado aborts after daughter gives birth

The graft trial of Governor Okoth Obado was adjourned yesterday when the court learnt that one of the suspects gave birth.

Evelyne Obado, the fifth accused in the case was unable to attend court physically but would be available to watch the proceedings digitally if allowed.

The matter has been continued to today by Milimani Anti-Corruption Chief Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi.

For three months, he excused the new mother from attending physical court sessions.

Mugambi, on the other hand, has ordered Adhiambo to appear in court virtually starting today, while her co-accused will appear in person. Susan Scarlet, Obado’s other daughter, is also pregnant, according to the court.

The prosecution told the court that they were aware of Adhiambo’s condition and confirmed that they had been supplied with her medical records.

They asked the court to vary its orders on accused persons appearing virtually so that Adhiambo can follow the proceedings from her home in Migori.

Mugambi allowed the application for her to appear virtually but adjourned the matter to Tuesday to give time to the ICT team to set up the virtual system for her to be able to follow.

At the same time, the court also dismissed an application for adjournment by Lawyer Kioko Kilukumi, who appears for Obado.

Kilukumi had asked the court to strike out all the three dates that it had allocated, saying he was unwell and could not be able to attend the court sessions.
