Government receives 358,700 AstraZeneca vaccines from Denmark

The government has received a consignment of 358,700 doses of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine from Denmark.

The consignment arrived in the country yesterday night at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport(JKIA) and were received by government officials led by Health Principal Secretary Susan Mochache, Foreign affairs Chief Administrative Secretary Ababu Namwamba, Ag. health Director General Dr. Patrick Amoth and vaccines deployment taskforce chair Dr. Willis Akhwale.

The Consignment donated by Government of Denmark is to boost the ongoing second dose vaccination exercise that commenced late last month.

This comes days after Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) raised concerns about shortage of Covid-19 vaccines to be distributed as second doses to healthcare workers.

“Dear Ministry of Health there seems to be a communication breakdown regarding the second dose of the vaccine. There’s extreme shortage,” they tweeted.

According to Health Ministry data, 192,093 persons had received their second doses by yesterday with total vaccinations standing at 1,187,663.

192,093 Kenyans have received their second dose while 188,364 have been fully vaccinated.

The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose is at 18.9 per cent with the majority being males at 56 per cent while females are at 44 per cent.

The proportion of adults fully vaccinated is now at 0.72 per cent.

The consignment will be delivered by Unicef to the Health Ministry before being distributed to regional vaccine stores for further distribution to the counties.

They will be administered to those who have already got the first dose, with healthcare workers prioritised.
