Government creates new sub county in Laikipia to address insecurity

The government has created a new administrative sub-county in Laikipia to tackle the rising insecurity in the county.

The creation of a new administrative unit comes amid rising tension in Ol Moran area where at least 10 people have been killed in the ongoing insecurity in Laikipia West.

In a gazette notice, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i created a new administrative sub county named Kirima.

“In an effort to enhance coordination of the functions of the national government, the Interior Cabinet Secretary has established a new administrative unit as a service delivery and coordination unit,” read part of the gazette notice.

Tension has continued building in Laikipia West as bandits torched more houses, including homes owned by police reservists.

This happened as Matiang’i and top security chiefs are visiting the area to review ongoing police operations.

Seven homes, two of them belonging to National Police Reservists, were torched at Dam Samaki village in Ol Moran area by heavily armed bandits.

However, nobody was injured in the incident since families living in the area had already fled.

Matiang’i is today expected to announce changes in security management, as several government agencies are involved in the security operation exercise.

The military is offering air support in the operation.

The ministry had launched security operations in Laikipia and nearby areas in the Rift Valley region to primarily focus on apprehending bandits and cattle rustlers.

Matiang’i also imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in the Laikipia Nature Conservancy until further notice.

Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya accused area leaders of financing the youth causing unrest in the region by providing them with food and guns, as they continue with their raids.
