“Whether it’s navigating the bustling streets of Nairobi, exploring the coastal beauty of Mombasa, or planning road trips to iconic locations such as Tsavo National Park and the Equator Marker in Nanyuki, Kenyans have embraced the technology to enhance their daily lives,” she says.
Bao Box has been named the most reviewed cafés in Kenya. In second place is Cafesserie, The River Café, NewsCafe – Adlife (Kilimani), Pallet Café, and Cafe Bistro. They are followed by Matbronze Café, Cafe Mocha, and Mubins Café.
Google Maps officially turns 20 this month, marking two decades of helping people navigate the world and discover new places. What started as a simple desktop tool in 2005 has grown into an essential part of daily life, offering real-time traffic updates, immersive 3D views, turn-by-turn navigation, and AI-powered search capabilities.
“From its earliest days, Google Maps has been on a mission to make the world more accessible. Some of our most significant milestones include launching on desktop to help people find directions (2005), introducing real-time traffic updates and Street View (2007), and creating own maps from scratch using satellite imagery, government data, and user contributions in 2009,” says Gathaiya.
Other significant milestones include onboarding Local Guides community, with volunteers sharing reviews and photos to keep Maps fresh (2015), Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered Live View brought augmented reality walking navigation in 2019, and in 2024, the Gemini AI era transformed Maps into an even more powerful assistant for discovering new places.
“Today, Google Maps provides 12 billion miles of directions daily, which would take someone over 22,000 years to drive without stopping. It hosts five billion reviews, 250 million businesses and places, and 500 million active contributors,” Gathaiya adds.
