Gender PS Wang’ombe raises alarm over rising defilement cases in Nyeri County

She noted with concern that many young victims of defilement often remain silent because they lack awareness about their rights or how to recognise inappropriate conduct, particularly when the perpetrators are individuals known to them

Gender and Affirmative Action Principal Secretary (PS) Anne Wang’ombe has raised concern over the increasing cases of defilement in Nyeri County, calling for greater awareness and protection for children.

Speaking during a visit to Riamukurwe Primary School in Nyeri Town constituency today, the PS shared breakfast with pupils and delivered food supplies to support the school through the current academic term.

She also distributed dignity packs to girls, emphasizing the ministry’s ongoing efforts to promote menstrual hygiene, school attendance, and gender equity.

Wang’ombe took the opportunity to engage the pupils in a mentorship session, where she urged them to stay focused on their studies and spoke candidly about the dangers of gender-based violence (GBV).

“I encouraged the pupils to remain committed to their education and reminded them of the importance of speaking out against any form of abuse,” she said.

She noted with concern that many young victims of defilement often remain silent because they lack awareness about their rights or how to recognise inappropriate conduct, particularly when the perpetrators are individuals known to them.

“It is alarming how many children do not know how to report abuse or even identify it. This silence continues to empower offenders,” said Wang’ombe.

She revealed that the Ministry has agreed to partner with school heads across the county to create awareness among learners and their parents.

“School principals are key stakeholders in this fight. We must work together to protect children and ensure they grow up in a safe environment,” she added.

The PS also called for community involvement and urged local leaders to take a firm stand against GBV and other forms of child abuse.
