Court acquits four officers arrested for allegedly attempting to rob Nairobi-based forex bureau staff
Four police officers who were arrested on Monday over an alleged robbery attempt on a foreign exchange bureau staff in Nairobi were released unconditionally due to lack of evidence.
Milimani Chief Magistrate Bernard Ochoi court ruled that the evidence put forward was not enough to connect the officers to the allegations against them.
The Investigating Officer however told the court that investigations were ongoing to uncover the reality of the incident.
He also noted that the matter would be addressed internally in accordance with the standing orders of the National Police Service.
“An inquiry file has been opened and the matter will be dealt with administratively under the national police standing rules,” the officer stated.
Additionally, the court ordered the release of the mobile phones confiscated from the officers.
The four officers; Daniel Wambua, Eliud Kipkurui, Stanley Gitonga and Nicholas Murira were arrested while attempting to rob a staff of a foreign exchange bureau in Nairobi.
Police said that the businessman had withdrawn Sh2million from a nearby bank in the company of his colleague at around 11 AM when the officers approached them, purporting to arrest them for an offence they did not disclose.
The businessman raised alarm which attracted the nearby security guards and police officers who were guarding a nearby Forex bureau who rushed to the scene and took the bag containing the money for safe custody.
