Four bodies exhumed in Mwingi mass grave as police link case to earlier killings

Residents of Mwingi Town are in shock and fear after police exhumed the bodies of four adult men from a shallow mass grave in a thicket on the outskirts of the town, raising concerns of possible serial killings in the area.
The discovery was made on Tuesday this week after a report was filed at Mwingi Police Station about a suspected shallow grave in the bushy area.
Security officers moved in quickly, cordoning off the scene as forensic experts and homicide detectives began investigations.
The exhumation, which was initially delayed until a specialised team from Nairobi attached to the Homicides Directorate under the Directorate of Criminal Investigations arrived, later proceeded under tight security.
Officers recovered the naked bodies of four adult males, which were later moved to the Mwingi Level IV Hospital mortuary for identification and post-mortem examinations.
Mwingi OCPD Anthony Maina confirmed the incident and appealed to residents who may have missing male relatives to report to the police station to assist with identification.
He assured the public that investigations were ongoing to establish the identities of the victims and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
The detectives are also examining whether the newly discovered grave is linked to earlier disturbing incidents in the same area, where the bodies of a man and a woman were found dumped barely a month ago.
The female victim in that earlier case had reportedly been mutilated and beheaded, deepening fears among residents that a pattern of organized killings may be unfolding.
Investigators are now seeking to determine whether the victims were killed elsewhere and their bodies transported and dumped in the outskirts of Mwingi.
Police have not ruled out the possibility of a serial offender or a coordinated criminal network operating in the area.
The latest discovery has heightened anxiety among residents, who are calling for increased security and swift action from authorities to prevent further killings and restore confidence.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident in Nakuru County, police are investigating a brutal domestic murder in which a 40-year-old woman, identified as Everline Nyarinda, was allegedly killed and dismembered by her husband at Kio Village in Kipkewa Sub-location, Kuresoi North Sub-County.
According to police reports, the suspect allegedly attacked the victim on the evening of June 6, 2026, before fleeing the scene and remaining at large. Officers who responded to the incident found the victim’s remains packed in five cement bags, while blood had been collected in a five-litre container.
A blood-stained axe believed to have been used in the attack was also recovered and taken in as evidence. Crime scene investigators documented the scene before the body parts were transported to Kericho County Referral Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.
Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect as investigations continue into the motive and circumstances of the killing.
