Former prisons boss Patrick Mwenda dies after bathroom accident

The former Assistant Commissioner General of Prisons, Patrick Mwenda, has died two days after undergoing a head surgery.

The deceased, who died at a private hospital in Mombasa, was undergoing a head surgery to remove a blood clot, which was reportedly formed after a bathroom accident.

Francis Mwangi, a friend of the deceased told a local daily that Mwenda was in perfect health in his Mombasa home when he fell and suffered a head injury.

“He, unfortunately, died a couple of days after the operation,” he said.

Further, Mwangi revealed that Mwenda was a supporter of cremation and that they will honour his wishes.

Mwenda served as the Officer in Charge of Naivasha Maximum Prison before his retirement.

While in Naivasha, he embraced the Mindfulness programme and enabled huge opportunities for the inmates.

The project is held, organised and structured by the Mindful Welfare Officers themselves and the programme is sought after by the inmates who arrive in prison.

He will be remembered for introducing education reforms in the country’s correctional service centres that has seen over 2000 inmates get an education from jail.
