FKF condemns hooliganism, warns clubs and players of penalties

Rising attacks of match officials during games have raised safety and security concerns

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has issued a stern warning over continued intimidation, harassment and attacks of match officials during games with concerns of safety and security.

In a statement to newsrooms today, the federation expressed concern over the rise of cases of hooliganism creeping back to football.

“Football Kenya Federation (FKF) acknowledges the concerns raised regarding the standard of officiating in our leagues. We recognize the crucial role referees play in upholding fairness and the integrity of the game. As part of our commitment to improving officiating standards, FKF continues to prioritise referee development and capacity-building initiatives across all leagues. Steps are already underway to enhance the quality and consistency of officiating, “ FKF boss Hussein Mohammed said, adding the FKF Disciplinary Committee would take up the matter in due course.

He added: “Additionally, FKF strongly condemns any form of hooliganism, including attacks on match officials and security personnel. Such incidents have no place in football, and individuals found culpable will face strict disciplinary action. The relevant FKF committees will convene to review recent cases and take appropriate measures in line with established regulations.”

In recent weeks, the FKF- Premier League (FKF-PL) and National Super League (NSL) have witnessed several incidents of referees being attacked by protesting fans over decisions made on the pitch.

On Sunday, an Assistant Referee (Dickson Omondi) was attacked by irate Migori Youth FC fans, including a police officer at MPesa Foundation Academy Grounds in a match pitting the club against Nairobi United FC.

Last month, during a Super League match pitting 3K FC and Kibera Black Stars FC at Embu Stadium, the home fans accosted the referee for what they said was poor officiating.
