Five officers charged with murder of Mombasa tout, to be remanded till December
A court has ordered five police officers charged with the murder of a Mombasa conductor to be remanded in prison till December.
The five; Khalif Abdulahi Sigat, James Muli Koti, Joseph Odhiambo Sirawa, Edward Kongo Onchonga and Nelson Nkanae pleaded not guilty.
“The suspects will be held in prison pending the hearing of their case scheduled for December 6 and 7, 2021,” the court ruled.
This follows an investigation by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
The five are said to have been involved in the death of Caleb Ospino Otieno, which occurred at Changamwe Police Station, Mombasa County.
Otieno was booked in at the station as “unknown,” after he was arrested at around 1800 hrs on September 18, 2018, on suspicion of being in possession of illegal alcohol Changáa.
“At around 2100 hrs same day, he was removed from the cells and later transferred
to the Coast General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” read IPOA statement.
The investigation established that Otieno’s death was occasioned by multiple injuries inflicted with blunt force.
The civilian oversight body against police recommended murder charges against the five officers.
The Office of Director of Public Prosecution independently reviewed the IPOA
investigation file and acceded to the reccomendations.
