Festive season: Police reveal mobile court hotspots

The Kenya Police have announced plans to deploy mobile courts along notorious routes to ensure motorists who flout traffic rules face instant justice during the festive season.

Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat said the police have mapped out hot spots where traffic violations are most likely, mobilising additional personnel alongside judiciary officers to curb road accidents and lawlessness.

Notable routes include the Nairobi–Nakuru–Eldoret highway, with hot spots at Lari, Kimende, Soko Mjinga, Salgaa, Gilgil, and Timboroa. The Nairobi–Mombasa highway, particularly Emali, Kyumvi, and Makindu, as well as the Nairobi–Narok–Bomet highway, will also host mobile courts. Lagat noted that these areas are notorious for various road crimes, and the deployment aims to prevent a repeat of past traffic chaos.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), in partnership with the Traffic Police, has launched a nationwide traffic operation to facilitate smooth traffic flow and enhance road safety.

Mobile courts will be complemented by physical and electronic enforcement measures. Tourist destinations and areas frequented by both locals and foreigners will receive additional police presence.

The festive season operations follow a strategic meeting at the Ngong Traffic Base, where regional commanders presented their security plans.

Police on leave have been recalled to strengthen street presence, and illicit brew, noise pollution, criminal gangs, and inter-communal clashes, especially in Angata Barrikoi, Narok, are also being addressed.

The National Multi-Agency Command Centre (NMACC) has been activated for nationwide coordination, intelligence sharing, and rapid response.

Regional and county-level centres will support operational command. Security personnel drawn from the National Police Service, Kenya Prisons Service, Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Forestry Service, National Youth Service, and Kenya Coast Guard Service have been deployed to airports, border crossings, highways, hotels, shopping malls, beaches, tourist sites, CBDs, entertainment joints, places of worship, and critical infrastructure points.
