Ex-Wajir governor Mohamud, a man stalked by controversies
The embattled former Wajir Governor Abdi Mohamed Mohamud is a man always under siege.
Besides being a director of Abrar Medical Clinic and Young Muslims Association, Mohamud served as a civil servant before joining active politics.
And despite having authrored his resume as a competent clinician, his academic credentials have been subjected to scrutiny and a formidable litigation.
From defending his professional qualifications, the former diplomat has always been fighting for his political survival.
His academic credentials were subjected of a long protracted court case that would have seen him lose but he survived.
Yesterday, dramatic scenes played out when Mohamud was humiliated and ejected from a meeting jointly convened by Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang’i and the Council of Governors.
Despite his ouster and subsequent installation of his deputy Ahmed Ali Muktar as the substantive governor, Mohamud claimed he’s still the incumbent in attending the meeting was between county governors and National Development Implementation and Communication Cabinet Committee (NDICC).
However, the situation degenerated forcing the Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua to intervene before the former governor was forced out in disgrace.
The embarrassing incident caused a bit of confusion in the meeting, forcing the organisers to call police officers to intervene.
In a petition filed by former governor Ahmed Abdullahi at the Supreme Court, he accused Mohamud of forging his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Kampala University.
Ahmed lost the 2017 gubernatorial elections to the impeached Mohamud.
In defense, Mohamud submitted to the Apex court an affidavit sworn by Kampala University’s Academic Registrar Ssegawa Hamza showing that he was admitted at and graduated from the university.
“I checked with our records and confirmed that the said Mohamed Abdi Mohamud was admitted to Kampala University on July 29, 2009 to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration.
“He cleared for graduation and was accordingly awarded a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration at the graduation ceremony held on March 1, 2012,” said Hamza.
He was finally exonerated by the Supreme Court.
Recently, he was impeached from office in May this year after a total of 25 Senators voted in favour of his removal over alleged gross violation of the Constitution.
This came despite Mohamud’s unsuccessful plea for leniency in light of the charges levelled against him and his office.
“I wish to plead with the senators to be sympathetic and not just impeach me just because of one issue. It can be a violation of the constitution but it is not a gross violation,” he said.
A committee chaired by Nyamira Senator Okon’go Omogeni had recommended Mohamud’s ouster noting that it was satisfied that he had flouted County Government Act, Public Procurement Act, and Asset Disposal Act, and the Public Finance Management Act.
The Wajir County Assembly alleged that the governor had caused the health sector to run into disarray compromising the right to the highest attainable health standards.
Other deeds included; building 50 new health facilities, acquiring a powerful generator to run an oxygen plant in the entire county referral hospital and that the county had 16 operational ambulances.
