The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority(EPRA) board of directors have appointed Daniel Kiptoo Bargoria as the new Director General.
Kiptoo replaces Pavel Oimeke, who resigned in March under a cloud of corruption allegations.
Kiptoo, who has been the acting DG since December, will serve for a three-year term renewable once.
“Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (Epra) board of directors in consultation with the Cabinet Secretary for Energy, Charles Keter has appointed Mr Daniel Kiptoo Bargoria to the role of Director-General for a term of three years renewable once with effect from July 1st 2021,” read a statement signed by the chairman, retired justice Jackton Ojwang.
Prior to his appointment, Kiptoo was the Legal Advisor at the Ministry of Energy and State Department of Petroleum and the chairman of the Government’s first oil committee.
According to Epra, Kiptoo has vast experience in the Energy and Petroleum sectors, with a bias in policy formulation, regulation and project and structured finance.
On February 16, Oimeke submitted his resignation to the Energy CS amid a corruption case in which he is accused of demanding a Sh200,000 bribe to reopen a petrol station in Homa Bay County.
He was charged following a probe into the incident by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
He pleaded not guilty and was released on a cash bail of Sh.200,000.
His return to the office after arrest in December led to a split in the board which made Kiptoo replace him in an acting capacity.
He is now the Member of Parliament for Bonchari Constituency, Kisii County.
