Embrace tech to attract Gen Zs into agriculture, says Kagwe

Agriculture should be made attractive with the use of technology and making the sector more profitable to draw more youths into the investing in agriculture, Cabinet Secretary nominee Mutahi Kagwe says.

Appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Appointments at County Hall in Nairobi, Kagwe said the youths are interested in making money and not because they are urged to do agriculture.

“Gen Z and millennials today are about one thing if they are to be involved in business. It is about profit and making money. No youth will go into Agriculture because of how we urge them but if they are going to make money,” he stated.

He said the necessary steps need to be taken for agriculture to be responsive to profit-making.

“There are many activities within the sector that we have to do. To attract the youth who do not have land, for example, we have to think about how to make land affordable to them. There is a lot of land that is lying idle that we can lease to them and then make sure it is profitable to them for them to buy the idea by intensifying even in research. We have to use technology because that’s what they are interested in,” he stated.

He said the part of agriculture that youths need to be involved in should be made specific including tourism in agriculture.

“There is fintech and agri-finance which the youths will be interested in. We want the agriculture sector to be attractive to Kenyan youth. The current structure is boring and needs to involve technology to make it more exciting. Artificial Intelligence will play a crucial role in the future,” he said.

On curbing food insecurity and underproduction, Kagwe said if approved to be CS they will focus on increasing the income of farmers where they ensure they analyze the profits and losses.

“We will continue to face issues of food security and underproduction until farmers analyze their profit and loss statements. Our focus must be on increasing farmers’ income.
