Electoral violence-related occurrences have decreased this year, Matiang’i affirms

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has said that electoral violence-related occurrences have decreased this year compared to the same period last year.

Speaking today at a roundtable discussion on Kenya’s economy and election preparations hosted by the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) and the National Development Implementation Communication Cabinet Committee (NDICCC) who included CSs Joe Mucheru (ICT), Betty Maina (Trade), James Macharia (Transport) and Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai among others.

“Incidences of crime and hooliganism related to elections have significantly reduced compared to the same period in the last election. We are going to have one of the most peaceful elections in the country,” stated Matiang’i.

Matiang’i claimed that statistics from the Inspector General’s office shows that electoral violence cases have decreased to around a fifth of what they were in 2017, demonstrating how much the country has progressed.

The CS reassured the business community that all precautions have been taken to ensure a peaceful election period, and advised them to proceed with their preparations without worry.

He also asked candidates to run peaceful campaigns and avoid making provocative remarks.

Carol Kariuki, KEPSA CEO, pledged to assist the government in guaranteeing a peaceful election and a smooth transition.

She also asked Kenyans to assess leaders prior to voting for them.

“We are challenging Kenyans to ‘kagua before uchague’ and we all know the question governing this election is corruption and the economy so please make the right choice,” she stated.
