DCI launch probe into Jeff Mwathi’s ‘mysterious’ death
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched investigations into the death of 23-year-old Jeff Mwathi who died in unclear circumstances at the house of Mugithi singer Lawrence Njuguna alias DJ Fatxo.
Yesterday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki revealed that he had asked homicide detectives based from the DCI to send a team of experts to thoroughly investigate the incident and take necessary action.
“On the matter of Jeff Mwathi, I have spoken to Amin this morning and instructed him to send a homicide team from his headquarters to thoroughly investigate the incident and take necessary action. The homicide team is dispassionate and this will help resolve claims of collusion at Kasarani police station where the matter was reported,” Kindiki said.
Before his death, Mwathi met up with DJ Fatxo on February 21, 2023, to discuss an interior design job and had informed his mother of the same.
According to the deceased’s mother, Mwathi sent a video of the two of them (DJ Fatxo and himself) to confirm they were together and that she also had recorded calls.
According to witnesses, Mwathi jumped from the 10th floor of the building and fell on the hard concrete.
However, relatives of the deceased expressed doubts on whether Mwathi really committed suicide and insisted that only a conclusive, open and transparent investigation would eliminate their suspicions of foul play.
According to a post-mortem report attached to the investigation, Mwathi died of acute trauma resulting from multiple injuries on the head and limbs.
Preliminary investigations indicated that Mwathi together with Fatxo and another man went to the house at around 3 am in the company of three women.
DJ Fatxo in his statement indicated that he returned to the house at around 9 am and found a commotion at his compound but did not clearly understand what went on.
The two men who were left in the house indicated that Mwathi died by suicide after jumping out of the room.
In the investigation, detectives want to unravel the circumstance into which DJ Fatxo ended up taking Mwathi to an alcoholic spree and later to his house late at night if the reason behind the deceased’s visit was an interior décor job.
Detectives are also seeking to know the past mental status of the deceased to ascertain if he had exhibited suicidal thoughts and why his mother had fear of movements of her son to a point of asking for a video and audio evidence of where he was and who he was meeting up with.
They also want to establish what the reaction of the two men was after learning that Mwathi had died of suicide as they had alleged.
