Joseph Matheka’s death has now turned what began as a confrontation at a drinking establishment into a murder investigation, with detectives seeking to establish what triggered the fight, how it escalated and the circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing.
A late-night drinking session in Nairobi’s Ngando area turned fatal after a bar fight left one man dead and another nursing injuries today at dawn in Ngando area within Dagoretti in Nairobi.
Joseph Matheka died after he was allegedly stabbed several times during a confrontation at Mary’s Bar and Restaurant in Ngando, Dagoretti Sub-County, at about 2am.
Police were alerted shortly after the altercation and rushed to the scene, where they established that Matheka had been involved in a fight with another man.
The confrontation also left the second man injured, with police reporting that he had suffered a head injury and was bleeding heavily.
The two men were rushed to separate health facilities as efforts were made to save their lives. Matheka was taken to St Joseph Catholic Hospital, while his injured counterpart was taken to Rafa Hospital in Ngando.
Matheka, however, was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police processed and documented the scene at the bar as part of the initial investigations.
Matheka’s body, which had visible physical injuries, was later moved to the City Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination that is expected to shed further light on the cause and nature of his injuries.
Investigators are also expected to establish the sequence of events leading to the confrontation, identify other people who may have witnessed the incident and determine whether a weapon was used in the attack.
The second man remained under medical care as police continued investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal dawn brawl.
No arrests or charges had been reported by today morning, with detectives working to piece together what happened inside the bar before the violence turned deadly.
