Curfew imposed in Mandera to end today

Security agents in Mandera have said the curfew slapped by the government is still on despite no lifting orders on it.

The state extended the curfew to March 28, 2017 through a decision contained in a gazette notice by Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaisserry.

While extending the curfew the CS said the order came into effect on December 28, 2016, to March 28, 2017, from 6.30pm to 630 am.

Mandera has been a terror flash-point, having witnessed repeated attacks leading to the loss of   lives.

Mandera county commissioner Fredrick Shisia while speaking to the press on Tuesday said the orders are still on unless superseded by a gazette notice by interior cabinet secretary Joseph Nkaissery.

The curfew was imposed in October after 18 people were killed separately in a hotel and a residential place near the central business district.

Shisia said he is still waiting for communication from the CS as the curfew was to end on Monday at midnight.

He said area security agents and residents want the curfew to go on as it has curbed attacks.

The CS noted that an extension of the curfew will assist in dealing with heightened political temperatures in the region.
