Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter G. Munya has today flagged off the fingerling restocking exercise at Rugathati dam as he toured the Wamagana Fish Processing Plant in Nyeri County.
Addressing fish farmers, CS Munya noted that Aquaculture in Kenya is growing rapidly, noting that in 2009 to 2013 the government launched a Large-scale Aquaculture Support for Input Supply Fish production, post-harvest management and related activities.
This, according to Munya, was to spur growth of the Aquaculture subsector the government launched, the Aquaculture Business Development Program (ABDP) and achieve 100 percent food and Nutrition Security.
The programme will seek to support the operationalisation of fish processing plants in the country by supporting farmers to produce adequate fish to be processed at these facilities.
Factories will also see them support fish post-harvest management through the provision of cold storage facilities to reduce post-harvest losses while creating employment.
