Court issues conservatory order suspending Wajir Governor’s impeachment motion

The High Court has issued a conservatory order suspending Wajir Governor Mohamed Abdi Mohamud’s impeachment motion filed by the County Assembly that was scheduled for debate today.

In a press statement released by Mohamud, he stated that the Members of the County Assembly(MCAs) did not exhaust all the existing avenues to resolve disputes with him.

“I canvassed with majority of the membership of the County Assembly less than a week to the material day of filing the notice of impeachment that is on Tuesday 20th April 2021. I had a very hearty IFTAR with a number of the legislators,” said the governor.

“During all these interactions, I have not received major grievances from either the leadership or the membership of the Assembly other than their quest for payment of the car grants.”

According to Mohamud, he took the request on payment of the car grants made by both the Speaker and the Clerk to the Assembly very seriously and factored the total amount of KES 102 million in the first supplementary request for this financial year.

“It is in my considered opinion that the current battle staged by the  Members is not on service delivery but is politically instigated. I appeal to the County legislators to sober up and give honest dialogue a chance so as to attend to the more pertinent issues that require our attention,” he said.

Further, he appealed to the public to desist from propaganda and hate in the social media and instead preach peace and harmony during this Holy Month of Ramadhan.

Members of the Wajir County Assembly filed a motion to impeach Mohammud over claims of corruption, abuse of office and incompetency.

33 out of 49 MCAs filed a motion to impeach him and the motion has already gone through the first reading on the floor of the Assembly.

He was also accused by MCA’s of absconding duty and allegedly delegating authority to his wife Kheria Omar to run county affairs

According to Tulatula Member of County Assembly Abdullahi Isack, the governor has allowed his wife to literally run county affairs as the de facto authority turning the county into a family affair.

“He ceremoniously officiates and signs off where necessary for decisions she unilaterally makes based on her own wishes and judgment without due regard to any law,” Isack said.

Further, he added that it is an open secret in Wajir County and far beyond its borders that Kheira is the ‘supreme leader’ of the county and it is always her way or the highway.

“…This has brought ridicule and disrepute to the Office of the Governor,” he added.
