Cops accused of aiding murder suspect Wanjala’s escape freed on Sh150,000 bail

Three police officers accused of aiding murder suspect Masten Wanjala’s escape from custody have been freed on Sh150,000 cash bail each.

Appearing before a Nairobi court, the three Phillip Mbithi, Boniface Mutuma and Precious Mwinzi were charged on two counts of aiding a prisoner to escape and neglect of official duty contrary to section 124 and 128 of the Penal code respectively.

Through Lawyer Danstan Omari, the three asked the court to grant them reasonable bond terms and supply them with all necessary documentation that will be used in the trial.

They were released on a Sh300,000 bond and a surety of the same amount or an alternative cash bail of Sh150,000 each.

The case will be mentioned on November 4.

It’s alleged that on the night of 12th and 13th October 2021 at Jogoo Road police station within Nairobi County, the three cops jointly aided the loathed self-confessed serial killer Wanjala’s escape from police custody.

However, the suspect met his death last Friday after irrate residents beat him to death in Kabuchai sub-county, Western Kenya.

“Special Service agents had been on his trail in Western Kenya, but unfortunately he was spotted by villagers in Bungoma, and beaten to death before our agents re-arrested him,” stated Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI).

Last month detectives confirmed that Wanjala had killed four minors in Bungoma, bringing to 13 the number of his victims.

The 20-year-old led detectives to two murder scenes in Machakos county, five in Nairobi and two in Kajiado.

He was scheduled to face 13 counts of murder.
