Close shave with death as five escape with injuries on Thika-Garissa Highway

The accident victims were rushed to Matuu Level 4 Hospital for medication

Five people escaped death by a whisker in a nasty accident on Thika-Garissa Highway in Machakos county on Sunday night.

They sustained serious injuries after two motor vehicles they were travelling in got involved in a head-on collision at Mathauta Bridge in the Kanyonyo area in Yatta Sub-county.

According to police, all the injured persons were all occupants of the said motor vehicles. One of the cars had three occupants while the other had two. The matter was reported to Matuu Police Station as a non–fatal accident incident report.

Traffic police officers from the station rushed to the scene, processed and cleared it thereby restoring normal flow of traffic on the busy road.

The accident victims were rushed to Matuu Level 4 Hospital for medication, while the mangled wreckages of the two vehicles were towed to the station for further inspection and other necessary actions.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), at least 13 people are killed on Kenya roads daily. By November 2024, the number of road crash casualties rose significantly, with 21,620 cases recorded.

This was an increase compared to 20,191 cases during the same period in 2023, signalling growing concerns about road safety in the country. Fatalities climbed to 4,282 in 2024, up from 3,901 in 2023. Serious injuries also rose to 10,662 compared to 9,501 the previous year.

Pedestrians and motorcyclists remain the most vulnerable road users. The NTSA data indicate that 3,917 pedestrians died in road accidents in 2024, up from 3,427 in 2023, while motorcyclists recorded 4,042 fatalities, an increase from 3,714 the previous year.

A total of 1,982 drivers were affected, including 369 fatalities, compared to 1,865 cases in 2023. Passenger casualties surged to 8,804, with 788 fatalities.

Pillion passengers recorded 2,673 casualties, an increase from 2,356 in 2023, while 202 pedal cyclists perished on the roads compared to 188 in 2023.
