Clinical officers agree to suspend strike to pave way for talks with governors

KUCO members in four counties including Kwale, Vihiga, Uasin Gishu, and Lamu are, however, set to remain on strike

The Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) has suspended its strike action for 21 days beginning on Monday to pave the way for a team formed by the Council of Governors (CoG) to address their issues.

KUCO Secretary General George Gibore said the union officials held a meeting with CoG on deliberate on their grievances, among them, recognition by the Social Health Authority (SHA), which has been fully addressed, and the posting of interns.

He said the county governments asked for more time to address the other issues raised by the striking medics.

“We suspend our strike for the next 21 days which begin next week Monday when the teams will be meeting,” Gibore said.

KUCO members in four counties including Kwale, Vihiga, Uasin Gishu, and Lamu are, however, set to remain on strike.

Gibore said the four counties have specific county-based issues and that they were not subject to the strike suspension.

KUCO also accused the government of high-handedness in dealing with their concerns.

The clinical officers commenced their strike on Monday over alleged discrimination by SHA and an unfulfilled Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

The CBA included deals on staff promotions, comprehensive medical cover, and the conversion of clinical officers on short-term contracts into permanent and pensionable positions.

Yesterday, the CoG had called on clinical officers to call off their new strike saying that some of the key issues that had driven them to down their tools have been resolved.

The CoG said the strike was triggered by miscommunication on the resolutions of last week’s mediation meeting on the issues raised.
