A civil society group has called upon the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) not to bungle with election this year as they did in 2017.
Through a statement, the society noted that the election management body must rise to the occasion this time around and do the right thing by ensuring that the process of casting, counting, tallying verification, and transmission meet the threshold set out in the Constitution and the law.
“There is no other time to bungle the 2022 elections as the IEBC did in 2017, and the election management body must rise to the occasion this time around and do the right thing by ensuring that the process of casting, counting, tallying, verification, and transmission meet the threshold set out in the Constitution and the law, and affirms that popular will of the people as expressed through their individual and collective ballots,” the statement read.
According to the group, IEBC has had an enormous opportunity that the periodic elections accord voters and people generally.
Further, the group stated that the tendency to choose on merit and demonstrate capacities and aptitudes seem to elude Kenyans every other election year.
“Kura Yangu! Maisha Yangu! the initiative calls on the registered voters not to squander this golden opportunity that only comes once every five years, and elect leaders of integrity, ensuring that we do not cast our votes for tainted, corrupt, and business-as-usual leaders who cannot account for pledges they made in previous elections,” it read.
The constitution motes the IEBC Article 138 (10) has seven days from the day of the General Election to declare the outcome of the presidential election.
In addition to pronouncing the vote, IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati is required by Article 138 (10) to “send a written communication of the result to the Chief Justice and the incumbent President” (b).
The commission has until Monday, August 15, to declare the presidential election result, after which any unhappy party would have seven days to submit a presidential election petition.
