City slum fire leaves one person dead with others sustaining minor injuries

One person on Sunday night was burnt to death in a fire incident in Nairobi’s Kiamutisya slum, Mlango Kubwa ward, Mathare constituency.

According to reports by residents, they suspected that the fire started in one of the houses where a 27-year-old woman with mental illness was locked in. The lady (now deceased), identified by one name (Zineb), had been left in the house by her mother.

The fires that started at 8pm razed down at least 27 structures, but was contained moments later. According to Kassim Kariuki, the community welfare, applauded the fire engines for their efforts to contain the situation otherwise it could have been worse.

He, however, challenged the government calling for a better way of managing the such emergencies in the slums by creating enough street paths in-between houses to avoid unnecessary time wastage while responding to such. The fire destroyed property worth an estimated a Sh1 million.
